“ Trapped” 2017/ 3D Mixed Media Collage by Geisa Morales
I was born on the colorful island of Puerto Rico where music, dance, art, and the importance of expression was emphasized. Daughter to a professional singer, I spent most of my childhood traveling, experiencing new places and meeting different people. I became an examiner of sorts. Human nature, expression, and communication fascinate me. I started my journey as an artist at the School of Visual Arts in New York City while also spending a lot of time at Pratt Institute, near amazing thinkers and creative minds that inspired me. My passion for collaging came from experiencing the ups and downs of life and my desire to document them. Through my art I found a way in which I could share my stories and the stories of other women while expressing my thoughts visually. In essence, I am a 3D Mixed Media Installation & Collage Artist who through her artwork tells stories of women; their struggles, their pain, their determination, love & loss, and their immense strength. About This Piece 12 million women in the United States experience clinical depression each year and many suffer in silence. This piece is titled “Trapped.” It is about the power of words and how what we choose to communicate to ourselves; how the words we feed ourselves can make us feel trapped. Hoping to give visual understanding to a certain aspect of depression, I created this piece using communication wire. As I do with all my art, I have hidden words and phrases throughout the canvas in hopes you will find them or that the message will subconsciously reach you.
