Adam Frus : glass artist

Methods

Adam Frus creates art with molten glass, a liquid medium that comes out of a furnace at more than 2100 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is a temperature that can light you on fire without even touching it.  After gathering the correct quantity of glass to work with, Adam begins adding coloration to his work.  The colors are all derived of glass, crushed to different particle sizes and then applied to the molten surface of the piece that he is working on.  Then, through continuous reheating and shaping, the process of coaxing that mass of molten glass into a specific form begins.  Adam uses a combination of traditional glass blowing techniques and new, glass sculpting techniques, to create the final forms.  Sculptural pieces are created using a hand held torch to soften specific areas of the glass which can then be manipulated with steel tools.  Adam does not use molds to create his work.  Each piece is crafted individually.

Biography Adam Frus is a glass artist, mineral collector and geology enthusiast.  He was first introduced to glass in 1997 at Jacksonville University in Florida.  Since that time, he has worked professionally with glass in Florida, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.  Adam has studied glass informally, but has had the opportunity to work with Italian and American masters, honing his skills through various jobs, workshops and assistantships.  Frus has lent his skills in glass blowing, glass sculpting, teaching and equipment fabrication to many emerging and established studios throughout the southwest.  He is always striving to help improve the glass scene wherever he goes.  In addition to his experiences in glass, Adam also has a B.S. in Geology from Arizona State University, which he earned in 2007.  After graduating, he became an Artist in Residence at the Mesa Arts Center between 2009 and 2011.  There, he began exploring ways to combine his scientific background and interests into his glass work.  During those same years, he cofounded a mobile glass blowing studio and began touring with it.  Then, in 2011, Frus branched out and built his own glass studio where he practices his art form today.

Saint Michael the Archangel by James Dingman

James Dingman on his 3 pieces in the Lobby

The three panel piece in the lobby is called Saint Michael the Archangel. It is a photograph, reproduced 3 times with different treatments. I am very happy with how the piece turned out.

I took the photo in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico a couple of weeks ago. I was fascinated by the play of light on a glass brick and shot it from a bit of a distance with my Google Nexus P smartphone. I like going for the abstract in photography – shooting the essence of something versus the reality of it – and I find blowing up a tiny image often accomplishes that. I tend to get good results with my phone – better sometimes than with my big digital SLR – because the quality is not quite as good. That little downgrade permits more imagination in working the photo. The original cropped image, before manipulation was about 500 pixels square. You see: I love extreme close-ups, extreme blow-ups and repurposed bad images!

I knew I wanted these BIG and I wanted themon fabric. I kept thinking about Keith Haring’s first show at Tony Schafrazi’s gallery in New York. He’d been doing chalk drawings in the subways, but Tony convinced him to go big and go colorful. The paintings for that show were huge and done on vinyl tarps, hung by the grommets in the edges. I wanted to do something like that – a kind of low tech approach to presenting the photos. I considered printing on tarp – something I’ve done before – but that produces a shiny plastic image. I wanted something softer.

Lots of vendors print on canvas. Usually, what that means is they print on paper and them thermo-bond the paper to the fabric. The result looks like a paper print with a texture. I didn’t want that. Some high quality printers print directly on canvas – more like a giclee – but are very expensive. I dug and dug and found a vendor in LA that specializes

in banners. They also offer ‘Fine Art Printing on Canvas’ but without all of the goo gahs of stretchers and frames. To them it’s just a high quality banner – and that’s exactly the look I wanted.

I abandoned the grommet idea for hanging and had them stitch 3″ pockets top and bottom so that I could hang them from dowels. This proved an excellent choice because the dowels keep the fabric straight and provide enough weight so that they hang properly.

The piece (it is one piece – a kind of triptych) is called ‘Saint Michael the Archangel.’ The title came to me as I was working over the photo. After all, I shot it in San Miguel – Spanish for Saint Michael. But more than that, it’s what the image said to me. Michael is one of the head angels. He is a fierce warrior – in fact, it is he that defeats Satan in the final battle – and he is usually depicted weilding a sword, vanquishing evil. But it is more than that. He’s also the protector of the people of Israel – the Jews. And he is the angel who comes to you when you are dying, helps you weigh your life, offers salvation and then gently carries you across to the other side. There is a gentle wisdom behind that sword. He is the best kind of warrior.

‘Saint Michael the Archangel’ says Peace, Kindness,Wisdom and Strength tome. That’s what I see and feel. I have priced it at $1,000 for the full set and would consider selling the individual panels for $400.

If you like to buy one or all 3 panels we are shipping, for sales information please contact Jana Lynch at [email protected]
