In 2016, Denise won “Best-in-Show” in the Las Vegas International Juried Art Competition. The winning artwork, “The Jacks of Jupiter” will be shown along with a dozen of the other pieces from her House of Cards Series.

The series reimagines a deck of cards in large-scale works on paper. Weaver Ross spent three years creating the vibrantly colored images: 52 cards plus four jokers/wild cards. The 26 x 40-inch images layer cultural, political, historical and mystical references. Clubs become trees, spades explore bones and fossils, and diamonds transform in to constellations and celestial bodies, and hearts draw inspiration from Egyptian Tomb paintings and the Tarot                                                           .

“Nobody can accuse me of being a minimalist,” Weaver Ross says, in describing these pieces. “I shuffle everything I’ve experienced or learned in life and create new connections and metaphors that play out in the images.”

The artist donates part of her profits to organizations that support people living with Sickle Cell Disease. Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes severe pain episodes and a shortened life span. The artist’s late husband, Colin Ross, died from complications of the disease when he was just 39.

Linda Schulthess Pottery

Linda Schulthess,
is afine artist, ceramist, and digital photographer began creating at an early age. Recognition for her talents came quickly-—in one art contest she won a motorcycle she could not ride because she was only 14.

Linda’s creative skills continue to be on the cutting edge, where she seeks new styles and methods to portray her art.  She is a member of the Orange Art Association and the Anaheim Art Association, where she has received numerous awards for her art achievements, including “Best of Show” in an Anaheim Art Assoc. annual juried Show.

On display and for purchase  at Jana’s RedRoom are some of her Raku ceramics:
RAKU:
It is raku’s unpredictable results and intense color that attract modern potters. These patterns and color result from the harsh cooling process and the amount of oxygen that is allowed to reach the pottery. Depending on what effect the artist wants, the pottery is either instantly cooled in water, cooled slowly in the open air, or placed in a barrel filled with combustible material, such as newspaper, covered, and allowed to smoke. Water immediately cools the pottery, stopping the chemical reactions of the glaze and fixing the colors. The combustible material results in smoke, which stains the unglazed portions of the pottery black. The amount of oxygen that is allowed during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting color of the glaze and the amount of crackle.

Unlike traditional Japanese raku, which is mainly hand built bowls of modest design, western raku tends to be vibrant in color, and comes in many shapes and sizes. Western raku can be anything from an elegant vase, to an eccentric abstract sculpture.

James Dingman talks James Dingman

   “a Day at the Beach” 30×48 $1250

James Dingman – July 2017

“This month I have 3 new pieces on Canvas.  I’ve been working on smaller pieces on paper for 3 months.  It was a hiatus I needed to take from canvas because my work had become kinda stale (at least, to me!).  The break was energizing and I came back to canvas with new ideas and materials.

This month I had a curvy, primitive hill scape in my mine and it is expressed in all three pieces.  The palettes and feel are all different, though.  Oh, and each of these was painted over an existing ‘failed’ piece.  I work in layers and the more, (usually) the better – so the bad paintings underneath just became a lower layer as I added more and more on top.

‘Shout Hallelujah’ Is all about joy. I see it being shouted from the hilltops in this piece.  I try to find some peaceful space in all my work, a simple plane of color to contrast with the chaos of the rest of the piece.  Here, it is red.  Most don’t think of red as a peaceful color, but I do.  To me it says, ‘I am at peace with passion and being alive.’

‘Wave’ almost was untitled.  But, again, the curving spaces begged to be called a wave.  I love the way orange can blend into pink through buff and/or white – and that’s what formed the background of this piece.  I wanted to demonstrate that and punctuate it with a lot of energy and motion. Hence all of the scratching and uncovering and slashes of lines.

‘A Day at the Beach’ developed as all my work does:  layer after layer after layer.  It is one, though, that I needed to simplify in the final layers.  The depth of the piece results largely from covering up some of what Is below, putting something over it.  It’s been very hot in Las Vegas this month and I wanted to suggest warm sea breezes and gentle sun . .  .and the suggestion of a woman leaving after a day of sunning.
